David D Westmaas

MARION — David Dean Westmaas, 73, of Marion, passed away at his home on Wednesday, November 14, 2018. He was born to Frederick and Irene (VanHouten) Westmaas in Marion on April 21, 1945. He married Margaret Ann Flachs on July 29, 1978, at the Highland Christian Reformed Church. Dave had served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971. He received a master’s degree in counseling, a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and his teaching certificate. He had been a teacher, counselor, and administrator at Northern Michigan Christian School in McBain for over 35 years. He taught middle school science and had a passion for teaching students to love and care for God’s creation. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, and traveling. He was a member of Highland Christian Reformed Church where he had served as an elder, taught Catechism, and led the education team. After retirement, he and Margaret worked with World Renew helping to rebuild homes after natural disasters. He loved singing and listening to music, especially hymns and choral music. He delighted in spending time with his family, grandchildren, and close friends. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann Westmaas of Marion; his daughter, Erin (Pete) McPherson of Rome, Georgia; and his two grandchildren, Luke and Addison McPherson also of Rome, Georgia. His surviving siblings are Wes (Sheryl) Westmaas of St. Louis, Missouri, Melodie (Tom) Kennedy of Rome, Georgia, Robin (Leo) Mulder of Grand Rapids, and in-laws, Donald Verduin of Ludington, June Mitchell, Mel Flachs, Charles (Karen) Flachs and Deb (Dennis) Bryant, all of Evart, Lisa McMillen of Rochester, Indiana, Jazanne McMillen of Gallatin Gateway, Montana, Cheryl McMillen (Connie Juntunen) of Falls Church, Virginia, Mitchell (Lisa) McMillen of New Milford, Connecticut, and Jon (Cathy) McMillen of Brownsboro, Alabama. He is also survived by his father-in-law, Gary (friend Wanda Rossiter) McMillen of Evart. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Irene Westmaas; mother-in-law, Donna McMillen; sister, Sharon Verduin; brothers-in-law, Jim Mitchell, Bill Flachs, Greg McMillen; and sister-in-law, Julie Paisley.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 19, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Highland Christian Reformed Church with Dr. Rev. Greg Kett officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Burkholder Family Funeral Home in McBain. Military honors will be given by the Cadillac Area Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to the Westmaas Scholarship Fund at the Northern Michigan Christian School. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Burkholder Family Funeral Home in McBain, and condolences may be left at www.burkholderfamilyfuneralhome.com.
