Bernard Leroy Wheelock, age 83, of LeRoy, passed away on May 13, 2019 at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was born on Feb. 12, 1935 at Tustin to Charles and Lolita Wheelock. He married Jessie Caroline DeVries on April 29, 1955 at the Lucas Christian Reformed Church and she preceded him in death on April 27, 2016. Bernard graduated from the Cadillac High School and served in the US Army from Jan. 10, 1958 to Jan. 8, 1960. He went to barber school while he was in the service and when he got out it became his life’s work. He enjoyed his job cutting hair, bowling, fishing, hunting, golfing, going for drives, and sitting on his deck in the summer drinking beer while watching the lake. He loved his dog Lady.
He is survived by his children, Scott Wheelock and Tom (Dawn) Wheelock both of LeRoy and Sally (Bill) Freeman of Ravenna. His grandchildren are, Branden, Megen, Nathen Wheelock, Amanda Schoonmaker, Cassandra Lintern, Samantha Freeman, Cheyanna Carew, and Rayeanna Freeman. There are 15 great grandchildren surviving along with in-laws, Marge Koetje of Zeeland and Betty (George) Groen of California.
He was preceded in death by his wife, granddaughter, Kristen Wheelock, brother, Leonard (Ruth) Wheelock and a sister, Pauline (Bob) VanderZand.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, May 20, 2019, at 11:00 A.M. at the Lucas Cemetery. Rev, Nick Wetherington will officiate. Military rites will be given by the Cadillac Area Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to one of choice. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Burkholder Family Funeral Home in McBain.
